(BEDFORD) - A Bedford woman was injured after she was smoking while on oxygen and then dropped a hot amber on a recliner.
Bedford Fire Department firefighters were called to Industrial Park Apartments on Industrial Drive at 11:57 a.m.
"When firefighters arrived smoke was coming out the east side of the apartment," Chief Jon Wagner says. "Smoke detectors were sounding and everyone was evacuated from the apartment building."
Wagner says Rhonda Lynn was able to escape on her own.
"She was able to get out of the apartment, but she did suffer burns to one or both of her arms and hands," Wagner says. "An IU Health Hospital ambulance was called and treated her at the scene and then transported her to IU Health Hospital for treatment. At one point she started to go back into the apartment, but we put a stop to that."
"The fire was roaring when firefighter arrived and caused extensive damage around $20,000 to $25,000," Wagner says. "Firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly and were on the scene for about an hour ventilating the other apartments."
