(BEDFORD) - While at Wal-Mart on Monday a Springville couple, with their 4-month-old child, were attempting to steal headphones and drinks, officials said, leading police to discover heroin in the woman’s purse.
Natalie M. Martin, 31, and Eric D. Martin, 35, were charged with theft, possession of heroin, possession of paraphernalia, maintaining a common nuisance and neglect of a dependent. They were booked into the Lawrence County Jail at 5:05 p.m. Monday.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the call came at 1:33 p.m. from the loss prevention personnel at Wal-Mart, 3200 John Williams Blvd.
Natalie Martin had been detained because she concealed two sets of headphones in her diaper bag and left the store without paying for them, the chief said. Parsley said Eric Martin and the 4-month-old child were with her at the time.
"After arresting them and looking through their bags and purses, drug paraphernalia and heroin were in her purse," Parsley said. "(Eric) stated it was his, and he put it in there that morning."
Officers then waited at Wal-Mart for relatives to pick up the baby.
Natalie Martin bonded out of jail Monday night on a $755 cash bond, 10 percent of the $7,500 surety bond. As of 8:30 a.m. today, Eric Martin was still in the Lawrence County Jail with bond set at $7,500 surety, with a 10 percent cash bond at $755.
