(BLOOMFIELD) - A 20-year-old Bloomfield man is accused of scrapping a red 4-wheeler that belonged to a family member, without their permission.
William "Billie" Levi Abel was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Greene County Jail on a charge of theft, a Class D felony.
According to the Greene County Daily World, Abel stole the 4-wheeler this past spring, scrapped it and then took the scrap metal JB Salvage in Bloomington where he was paid $135.60 on March 7.
According to Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Harvey Holt the family reported the 4-wheeler missing in May. The four-wheeler hadn't run in over a year but was being stored. It had been taken apart and the motor was out of it for repairs. Then it went missing along with some tires.
Holt went to JB Salvage and reviewed camera footage showing Abel, accompanied by another man, arriving at the salvage yard on March 7 in a gray pickup truck with what appeared to be pieces of a red four-wheeler and other pieces of scrap metal.
Holt interviewed Abel on July 2.
Abel at first said he didn't know what happened to the 4-wheeler or the other items that were missing, then changed his story and admitted he took the 4-wheeler without permission. He admitted it was wrong but he needed the money to help pay for a speeding ticket.
