(SALEM) - Salem Police Detective Scott Ratts says when 31-year-old Joshua Wieging snatched a money bag from a local convenience store employee and ran with it last Monday morning he did it literally in front of the cameras.
Wieging was arrested late Monday night and charged with robbery. The woman, who works at Collette's Market in Salem, was approaching PNC Bank on the square, money bag in hand, just before 10 a.m., when she was robbed.
Throughout the day, officers reviewed video from the bank and nearby businesses and conducted interviews. Once the alleged perpetrator's identity was confirmed, they went to a Pilgrim Way home to speak with him. Wieging admitted to the crime and told police he had been sitting on the Apothecary bench, saw her coming up the sidewalk and took the bags and ran.
According to police several thousand dollars was stolen and the majority of it has been recovered. According to police, Wieging had used some of the money to pay his rent and police are working with the property owner to recover it.
