(PATOKA) - A 3-year-old boy drowned at Patoka Lake Monday afternoon.
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the drowning that occurred around 3 p.m. Monday.
The incident occurred near the Little Patoka Boat Ramp.
The 3-year- old boy from Deputy had been swimming from a boat along with other family members.
Police say several boats were anchored together offshore along with the boat the boy had been swimming from.
Statements obtained from those at the scene indicated the toddler was wearing a lifejacket while swimming, but it was taken off after he got out of the water because he was cold and wanted to dry off.
After one of the boats left the group, they noticed the boy was missing and began searching for him.
The toddler was last seen sitting along the edge of the boat on a cooler just before the group realized he was missing.
Indiana Conservation officers found the boy in the lake around 4:08 p.m.
He was taken to Harrison County Hospital by Crawford County EMS personnel, where he was treated and later died.
Assisting at the scene were members of the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, English Volunteer Fire Department, and Air Evac.
Indiana Conservation Officers urge everyone to wear lifejackets in or around all waterways, whether swimming, in a boat or along the shore.
