(BEDFORD) - “Dangerous” Dave Bradford claimed first place in the pulled pork and chicken divisions and second in the brisket category en route to the coveted 2013 grand championship at the 4th annual BBQ at the Quarry.
For his efforts, Dangerous Dave walked away with a nifty stone pig carved by local artisan Terry Kirkman. "I love the trophy," a grinning Bradford insisted. "When I first saw it I said, 'I really want that trophy!'"
Bradford has competed in all four Quarry competitions. Huey's prevailed the first two years, and Two Soused Pigs claimed the championship in 2012.
Asked how he prepared for the contest, Bradford chuckled and said, "I watch YouTube. I love it. I get a lot of good ideas from there."
After a beautiful Friday night for cooking and concert-going, Saturday's events were doused with frequent showers. "I was almost done cooking before the rains came," Bradford said. "It didn't really bother me. You can't do anything about the rain. You just have to deal with it."
In Da' Pig House was the winner of the chicken category, while United Pork Smoker was first in the brisket division. Adam Thomas earned the Jim Seib Award for sportsmanship and fellowship.
"I want to thank everybody for sticking with us through the rain," said Ryan Griffith, who manages the festival with assistance from Greg Morris. "I know it was miserable out here at times."
