(BLOOMFIELD) - Bloomfield native Dr. Grant Burcham has been appointed veterinary diagnostician at the southern Indiana branch of the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, based at Purdue University.
Burcham will begin his work at the Heeke ADDL laboratory in Dubois County early in 2014. He is finishing Ph.D. work in the Department of Comparative Pathology at Purdue and will begin at the Heeke laboratory when that is completed, according to press release from Purdue University.
The appointment resulted in a national search and was announced in July by Stephen Hooser, director of ADDL.
"Dr. Burcham is well qualified to lead the laboratory and assist veterinarians and animal owners in the southern part of the state, so we are very pleased that he will be the next veterinary diagnostic there," Hooser said in the press release. "He is skilled in the diagnosis of animal diseases, which he will apply to both avian and mammalian diagnostics at the laboratory."
A Bloomfield High School graduate, Burcham received a master of science in veterinary pathology in 2010 and a doctorate of veterinary science in 2007 from Purdue and a bachelor's degree in biology in 2003 from Hanover College. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Burcham said he is looking forward to working with the producers and animal owners in southern Indiana to help address animal health needs there.
He added that he is also excited about working alongside the excellent staff currently at the Heeke laboratory.
The HDDL aids in the prevention, control and eradication of animal diseases in Indiana.
The Heeke ADDL opened in 1969 as a diagnostic laboratory primarily to serve the poultry industry in southern Indiana but has expanded to include livestock and other animals.
Burcham succeeds Duane Murphy who retired from Purdue after nearly 20 years of service to the university.
