(HELTONVILLE) - Firefighters from Shawswick and Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Departments battled a garage fire Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the home of Debbie Neely at 249 Ind. 446 at 5:36 p.m.
When firefighters arrived the barn was engulfed in flames.
"We were working on the roof of the trailer and heard a loud boom and then there was the fire," says Jerry Milligan, Neely's boyfriend. "I had just been in the garage and got two boards and didn't smell smoke or see a fire while I was in there."
Milligan says there is not power in the garage and isn't sure what caused the fire.
"I have no idea what happened," He says. "There was a lawn mower and old tractor in there and some gas cans, but no power. No one here smokes, so not sure what happened to cause the fire."
Milligan and Neely's children attempted to put the fire out.
"It was like spitting on the blaze," Milligan says. "It just took off and not much any of us could do. The heat was intense. So we started spraying that little storage barn next to the garage hoping the fire wouldn't spread."
Neighbors heard several small explosions as the barn burned.
Shawswick VFD Fire Chief Bobby Brown who was responding to the fire says the flames and smoke could be seen from Tunnelton Road.
"We knew it was going to be a big fire," Brown added.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
