(WASHINGTON) - Washington City Police have arrested a juvenile in connection with a threatening note that led to the evacuation of the Washington High School and Junior High School on Monday afternoon.
School officials evacuated more than 1,000 students from the two buildings after finding a note saying there was a bomb in the school set to explode.
Police, using bomb sniffing dogs, did a sweep of the high school buildings and found no bomb.
According to Washington Police Chief Mike Healy officers talked to staff and students and were able to determine who wrote the threatening note.
"The case is still pending and detectives are working with the prosecutor's office on a formal charge," Healy says.
Because the student is a juvenile, authorities are not releasing the student's identity.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Roach says even though the threat was over before school began Tuesday morning, the police department had an increased presence around the buildings when students reported to classes.
An officer was also posted inside the high school building - the goal was to make students feel safe.
Superintendent Roach was in the school Tuesday and it was business as usual.
"We're thankful nothing serious did occur," Roach says. "The safety of our students is always our top priority."
