(MITCHELL) - A Henryville man was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following a 4-wheeler accident Sunday afternoon on Rabbitsville and Yockey roads.
39-year-old William M. Scherschel, suffered head and internal injuries after being penned under the vehicle.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, Scherschel was operating a 2005 Suzuki LT-F40 and traveling west on Yockey Road when he attempted to turn south onto Rabbitsville Road and made the turn too sharply causing the ATV to hit an embankment and flip pinning Scherschel under the vehicle.
Police say Scherschel was not wearing a helmet. He was flown from the site by an Air Evac helicopter and taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is listed in critical condition.
A witness told police she had been with Scherschel just before the accident and that he had been drinking moon shine about 30 minutes before he had left to go to a friend's house on Peaceful Valley Road. The witness told police she and another woman left Scherschel's father's house a short time later, planning to join Scherschel at the friend's house. That's when they came upon the accident.
The Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcment was contacted and are investigating the crash.
Marion Volunteer Fire Department and an IU Health Hospital ambulance assisted at the scene.
