(BEDFORD) - School is back in session on Thursday for North Lawrence Community Schools and Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley and Sheriff Sam Craig are asking motorists to be cautious and look for pedestrian and bicycle traffic and buses loading and unloading students.
Police will be keeping an eye on area school buses and the traffic around them. Police say drivers need to plan ahead and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
Police will be doing concentrated patrols around schools and along bus routes looking for violators. Both Parsley and Craig stress the goal of these increased patrols is not to write additional tickets, but to help insure the safety of area children and drivers.
North Lawrence Community School Superintendent Gary Conner says elementary students will see some new faces and fewer aides when they enter their classrooms Thursday.
The reduction came after the state funding cuts to the Title I program aimed to help students improve reading and math skills.
Conner says the school program was cut about $330,000; about 96 percent of those funds goes to hire aides. Aides who were there every day all day will now have restricted hours to spend with students.
The school system also will see a slight cut in Prime Time funding from the state. That program pays for teacher aides who fill various educational roles.
Students at Dollens and Heltonville Elementary have new principals. Brain Perry will be at Dollens and Todd Tanksley will be at Heltonville. Dan Carpenter is the new director of Joint Services with Emily Dykstra serving as assistant director.
