(LEESVILLE) - A teenage girl was killed and another boy was seriously injured after a vehicle hit a moped and then fled the sceen on George Johnson Road Friday night.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, the accident happened in a 90-degree curve on George Johnson Road, which is south of Leesville near the Jackson County line at 6:30 p.m.
"The moped was hit by another vehicle that fled the scene," Craig says. "The juvenile female was pronounced dead at the scene. The male was lifelined from the scene to an Indianapolis hospital."
Craig called in an Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist to assist with the investigation.
Numerous emergency rescue workers from Guthrie and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments were also on the scene.
"We did locate a vehicle of interest in this accident and the case is still under investigation. We are hoping more information will be able to be released sometime late this afternoon," Craig says.
No arrests have been made at this time.
