(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police arrested several teens after an officer on routine patrol early Sunday morning in the area of 16th and O streets heard what could have been a domestic fight.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, when the officer went to investigate around 1:53 a.m., he found a large group of juveniles in the middle of the street at 16th and P streets yelling at each other.
Back up was called and when police began talking to the group of teens they noticed they all smelled like they had been drinking.
After giving the teens a breath test, they all tested positive for consuming alcohol.
Police arrested 19-year-old Samuel Mynatt of Bedford on a charge of illegal consumption and public intoxication and he was taken to the Lawrence County Jail.
Also arrested was a 15-year-old Bedford boy, a 14-year-old Springville girl, a 15-year-old Oolitic girl, a 14-year-old Fayetteville girl, a 13-year-old Bedford boy and a 17-year-old Columbus boy. All were charged with juvenile delinquency, illegal consumption and public intoxication.
Some were released to their parents, while others were taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
Chief Parsley says the probation department determined which teens could be released to their parents and which were taken to the detention center.
"It is their call," Parsley says. "We notify them and they determine if the teens can be released or are taken to the juvenile detention center. Many times these juveniles have been in trouble before and that is why they are transported to the detention center in Jackson County instead of being released to their parents."
