(BEDFORD) - SOAR! Executive Director, Adele Bowden-Purlee announced the organization has scheduled a volunteer training workshop for Tuesday October 15th and Thursday October 16th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bedford Area Chamber Of Commerce Conference Room.
The workshop will be conducted by Beverly McIntosh, Executive Director of the Martin County SOAR.
The training is required for volunteers to work with adult students on a one-on-one basis.
Volunteers will learn basic instructions as well as training on iPads, enabling tutors to utilize the Scholastic Newsreaders' Storia program.
Storia eBooks offer learning activities to build comprehension and reading retention at every reading level by enabling students to simply touch or highlight words for which Storia software is then able to offer definitions using words, pictures and optional read-to-me narration. A recent contribution from AT&T has enhanced SOAR's technology to include iPads and Pre-GED software.
SOAR! is free to adults who have not acquired basic reading and survival skills.
All trainings are strictly confidential.
SOAR! is a not-for-profit organization funded by tax deductible contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations. SOAR!'s mission is to provide adults in Lawrence County with the literacy skills needed to reach their full potential as individuals, parents, workers and citizens.
