(UNDATED) - The Utility Regulatory Commission is creating a new area code number: 930.
IPM reports that instead of dividing the preexisting 812 area into new zones, as was the case when area code 765 was created for northern Indiana a few years ago, the 930 number will overlay the area, meaning both 812 and 930 will be used. The 812 area code currently covers the 38 counties in southern Indiana.
Residents will have to use 10-digit numbers for all calls once the change goes into place.
IURC spokesperson Danielle McGrath says residents who didn't want to lose their numbers, preferred the overlay option.
McGath says officials traveled to 10 different locations including Bedford and Bloomington to hear from the public. After all the research was gathered, they found that most individuals preferred the 10-digit dialing instead of potentially losing their existing phone number.
McGrath says customers should begin familiarizing themselves with the changes now and be ready for the switchover so they will be prepared.
There will be a 13 month grace period to prepare customers for the full switchover. During that time customers will be able to learn more about the overlay and still use seven-digit numbers.
