Two Juveniles Vandalize East Washington Monument

Last updated on Friday, August 23, 2013

(SALEM) - An East Washington Middle School student is one of two youths accused of destroying a monument outside the school’s entrance.

Superintendent Steve Darnell says two boys, one an East Washington Middle School student, and the other, a freshman from New Albany, were caught on school surveillance footage pushing the monument back and forth until it came loose from the metal rods holding it to its base and fell, breaking in half.

Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Roger Newlon says the school is waiting on word from the Class of 1955 about the cost of the monument and reports have been sent to the probation and prosecutor's offices. Darnell says the parents of the two boys will pay for the damages.

As of now, officials haven't decided on what or how many charges the two boys will face, but the charges could include vandalism and trespassing, as school was not in session at the time and no school events were going on at the time.
