Apple iPhone 5S Release Is Generating New Scams

(UNDATED) - The excitement surrounding the Apple iPhone 5S is generating new scams.

The Better Business Bureau warns consumers, there is no lottery, giveaway, prize drawing, contest award, or other prizes associated with this launch.

Apple sold out of its initial supply of iPhone 5s phones. The company sold 9 million iPhone 5S and 5C devices in the first weekend the two new iPhones were available, and the iPhone 5S is on backorder online.

The latest Apple iPhone promotion scam involves a fraudulent email message that states you have won the iPhone 5S and iPad devices as part of the new launch. To get the winnings, email recipients must turn over their personal information. This is an attempt to phish for your personal information.

Another scam includes malaware, and encourages iPhone users to turn over their Apple ID, passwords, and financial information. The redirect puts the recipient on a website that has a URL not related to Apple.

And finally, an email has been reported telling pre-order recipients that there has been a delay and to update your billing address and verify credit card information. Yet another phishing attempt.

Here are some key points to remember from your BBB:

Apple is not giving away iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C to randomly drawn email addresses. The company is not holding a promotional award, lottery, drawing, prize, giveaway or reward.
Apple is not asking for your Apple ID or other personal financial information.
Apple is not having problems with your order. If you ordered a phone to be shipped shortly, check your shipping information at the Apple site. If you didn't order a phone, and you received an email stating there's a problem, delete it.
