(BEDFORD) - Bertha’s Mission, a community kitchen, opened its doors Tuesday at 1008 Fifth Street.
The former Chuck's Soul Food, which was owned by Bertha Sterling who passed away in 2012,is run by her daughter Janice Nickeo, family, volunteers and the Limestone Ladle, which also serves community meals two Sundays a month.
Also helping out on Tuesday were members from Tabernacle of Praise, Charity Chapel and Second Baptist Church.
Meals are served for free to anyone who comes in.
Diners who came for the first day left her $141 in donations which was unexpected, but appreciated.
Bertha's Mission will serve meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Nickeo says people are already asking if she is going to add days.
Nickeo says she hopes to, but the issue is paying the mortage and utilities and she is trusting that the Lord will provide.
