(BEDFORD) - CSX Railroad is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the trail derailment between Mitchell and Bedford.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, railroad police determined the derailment was caused by an act of vandalism.
"They determined someone tampered with the braking system, releasing the control causing the train to roll and derail," Craig added.
Anyone with information about the incident is to call the Lawrence County Police Department at 275 - 2002.
Lawrence County Sheriff's Department confirmed four CSX flatbed train cars derailed south of Bedford Sunday September 8 at 10:52 a.m.
The CSX train derailed south of the White River Trestle off Dixie Highway near Cresthaven Cemetery.
According to Sheriff Sam Craig, the trains no longer travel that section of railroad where the derailment happened.The train cars that derailed were empty.
Craig says the cars rolled a short distance and then derailed.
Police says there were no reports of injuries or hazardous materials involved.
Marion and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments and an IU Health Hospital ambulance and TOPES responded to the scene to assist.
