(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell group planning to create a youth center in Mitchell voted Monday night on an official name - The Southern Indiana Sports, Recreation and Youth Center.
The Times-Mail reports the group voted on a mission statement - "It is our mission to create and provide a safe, positive, friendly atmosphere for the future development and education of our youth and citizens of our southern Indiana communities."
Members also voted to work toward becoming a 501(C)3 or nonprofit organization through the Internal Revenue Service. But that takes funds and currently the organization has none. The process will cost an estimated $630.
The group gathered Aug. 29 with a local contractor and engineer to tour the former Pamida building on Teke Burton Drive in Mitchell. The group is considering the building because it would allow the facility to be in a centralized location.
Board President Chris Blackmore says the group will have a booth during the Persimmon Festival in front of Holmes Hardware to provide information about the youth center and to accept donations.
Those interested in learning more about the youth center can attend their next meeting will at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Mitchell Community Building.
