(MONTGOMERY) - It’s Turkey Trot time again.
The 41st annual Turkey Trot will begin today in Montgomery with carnival rides beginning at 5 p.m. and the media turkey race starting at 6:15 p.m.
According to DeWayne Shake, Festival Chairman new this year is a zip line that will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The Washington Times-Herald reports, the Turkey Trot, which started in 1972 by the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce with support from members of the Montgomery Ruritan, brought over 30,000 spectators from across the country to Montgomery. Reporters from New York, Chicago, and Louisville newspapers flocked to the area to cover the event as well as many television stations.
According to the Montgomery Ruritan website, the festival was supposed to be hosted by a rotating group of organizations in varying communities within in the county. However, since 1980 the festival has been sponsored by members of the Montgomery Ruritan with contributions from other members of the community as well.
The event, which is known not only for its infamous turkey races but for its entertainment as well, will be featuring turkey races each day with the championship event being held at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
Up and coming country artist Parmalee and long time artists John Michael Montgomery will take the stage over the weekend.
Shake said carnival rides will be open daily. Thursday and Friday the rides will open at 5 p.m. Saturday rides will start at 11 a.m. and Sunday they will start at noon. Flea Markets will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and there will be great food each day.
Special events for Thursday also include bingo at 6:30 p.m. and a farm stock tractor pull beginning at 6:45 p.m. Friday's special events include a performance by musical guests Parmalee at 8 p.m. and turkey races starting at 6:30 p.m.
The 5k will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Open horse pulls will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday followed by mud volleyball at 11:30 a.m., the corn hole tournament at 1 p.m., the 3-point free throw contest at 1:30 p.m., and the ITPA Indiana Truck Pullers at 2 p.m. John Michael Montgomery will take the stage at 8 p.m.
Sunday's events include pig wrestling at 1 p.m. and a demolition at 1:30 p.m. in addition to the turkey race championships.
Daily admission for the Turkey Trot is $10 per person. Children under age 12 are free. A four day season pass can also be purchased for $30 per person or $25 per person if purchased before Sept. 5.
