(SCOTTSBURG) - A docudrama about the nation’s first peacetime train robbery will be shown to the public for the first time Sunday as part of Reno Brothers Weekend in Scottsburg.
Roger Moon of the Times Mail reports the film tells the story of a notorious band of Jackson County brothers and other members of their gang.
After committing various crimes, three of the Reno brothers were pulled from their jail cell and hanged by vigilantes in New Albany in 1868.
The Renos committed other robberies in addition to the Oct. 6, 1866, train robbery at the Seymour depot.
Among them was the Marshfield robbery in Scott County. Marshfield (a site that doesn't exist today) was a watering station for trains in Scott County. The Renos had their biggest haul of $98,000 at that robbery
The docudrama that examines the lives of the band of bad boys is the brainchild of Anthony Susnick, a former Scottsburg resident who moved to Louisville and has been involved in a number of film projects.
The film will premiere as part of a fundraiser sponsored by the Scott County Heritage Center & Museum, 1050 S. Main St., Scottsburg.
Ed Cozart, a member of the museum's board of directors, said a number of activities are planned.
Among other highlights for the public during the weekend are:
Saturday
* 10 a.m.: Craft, food and pioneer demonstration booths will open at the museum. Children's period games and activities will be offered throughout the day.
* Noon: Dave Distler, author of "Anarchy in the Heartland -- The Reno Gang Saga," will offer a presentation and will sign books. Distler is executive producer of the docudrama.
* 12:30 p.m.: Music performances will begin and will be offered at intervals throughout the afternoon.
* 2 p.m.: Presentation by Mark Boardman, Reno Gang researcher and film consultant.
* 4 p.m.: A second presentation and book-signing by Dave Distler.
Sunday
* 1 p.m.: Classic Car Club of Columbus display on grounds of the Mid-America Science Park.
* 3 p.m.: Matinee showing of "The Legend of the Reno Brothers," in the Mid-America Science Park's Presentation Hall, 821 S. Lake Road, Scottsburg. Admission is $10.
Morgan Raque of Corydon is assisting Susnick in the production of the film and in its marketing.
