(ORLEANS) - A fire caused extensive damage to a turkey barn on County Road 200 East in Orleans.
According to Rural District II Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Sallee the fire at Riverview Farms was reported at 8:47 a.m. Sunday.
"The fire damaged a large portion of the barn and killed thousands of young turkeys," Sallee says. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is believed to have started after an electrical problem."
Firefighters from Rural District II and Vallonia VFD, not only had to battle the flames but intense heat.
Marion VFD was also alerted but was called off before they arrived.
"We were able to get the fire knocked down quickly," Sallee says. "We had several firefighters get sick after battling the fire. It was an extremely hot fire and many of the firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion. They went back to the stations and were able to cool off and everyone was fine after that."
