(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department confirms four CSX flatbed train cars derailed south of Bedford Sunday at 10:52 a.m..
CSX handles the rail and is investigating the incident.
The CSX train derailed south of the White River Trestle off Dixie Highway near Cresthaven Cemetery.
According to Sheriff Sam Craig the trains no longer travel that section of railroad where the derailment happened. The train cars that derailed were empty.
Craig says it was unclear what happened.
"Supposedly they started coasting and evidently rolled a short distance," Craig says.
He added that investigators will try to determine whether something might have happened to the cars' braking system or whether someone might have tampered with the cars.
Police says there were no reports of injuries or hazardous materials involved.
Marion and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments and an IU Health Hospital ambulance and TOPES responded to the scene to assist.
