(BLOOMINGTON) - The federal government’s ocean and weather-monitoring agency has awarded Indiana University $6 million to expand its operation of a science network that moves massive amounts of data.
IU announced Thursday that it will use the five-year grant to expand its operation of N-Wave, the science network used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That network moves massive data loads from remote monitoring sites, helping boost scientific collaboration and access to weather and climate data.
Engineers, software developers and other technicians at the IU Global Research Network Operations Center have since 2010 provided around-the-clock support to N-Wave. Data collected by NOAA has improved weather forecasts, warnings and understanding of Earth's climate.
NOAA's scientists study the complex interactions between Earth's atmosphere and its oceans that produce the planet's ever-changing weather.
