(GREENE CO.) - An accident involving three vehicles sent an Odon man to the hospital and snarled traffic on State Road 45 in eastern Greene County late Monday afternoon.
Damon L. Shake, 55, of Odon, had to be freed from his car, a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Greene County Daily World reports, emergency personnel from numerous agencies responded to the scene on the highway, one-half mile south of Johnson Lane also known as County Road 275 North, at 5:22 p.m.
Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Harvey Holt, the investigating officer, reported Shake was southbound on the highway when he crossed over the center line while going around a curve.
Police believe Shake may have fallen asleep. Shake's vehicle entered the northbound lane where there was an oncoming 2012 International semi-truck.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 47-year-old Douglas C. Kortee, of Indianapolis, attempted to avoid Shake's car and left the roadway, but Shake's vehicle hit the semi behind the cab on the driver's side.
Shake's car continued traveling southbound and skidded sideways into more oncoming northbound traffic and was hit on the passenger side by a third vehicle, a 1999 Ford F250 truck driven by 18-year-old Jackson W. Bowlen, of Bloomington.
All three vehicles came to a stop in the northbound lane, blocking traffic on the highway.
Rescue personnel freed Shake from the Malibu and he was treated and transported by the Greene County Ambulance Service. The other two drivers were not injured.
Deputy Holt was assisted by other deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Department. The Center Township Fire Department and Owensburg Fire Department also responded to the scene.
