(BEDFORD) - Student Council and Beta Club members at Bedford North Lawrence High School banded together to purchase more than $1,200 worth of toys for the American Bikers Aimed Toward Education initiative that provides Christmas toys for more than 300 children each year through the Marine Corps Reserves Toys For Tots program.
Students raise the funds through homecoming activities and other fundraisers.
Brenda Nolan, who sponsors both the student council and Beta Club, says students shop and pick out the toys and then drop them off to be given to children during a Christmas party.
For their participation in the project, the student groups received ABATE's Freedom Award.
Toys for Tots isn't the only community service project they also decorate trees for the Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor's annual Fantasia. The student council has decorated trees for at least the past 15 years, and the Beta Club has participated for the past seven years. Fantasia will take place on December 7.
Students also bring in canned goods for L.I.F.E., support Angel Tree projects and, last year, bought new clothes for several special needs students.
Nolan says these young men and ladies are playing a vital role in the community and thanks them for giving back to the community.
