Freetown Family Requests To Build Hog Barns

Last updated on Friday, November 22, 2013

(BROWNSTOWN) - A farm family’s request to build two 4,000-head hog barns northwest of Brownstown will draw both support and opposition during a public hearing next month.

James Lucas, 42, and his son, 16-year-old Matthew, of Freetown, outlined the request Tuesday night for the Jackson County Plan Commission. The panel voted 6-2 to forward the proposal to the Board of Zoning Appeals with a favorable recommendation.

The family wants to build the barns on 159.37 acres of land zoned for agriculture off County Road 300 North in Brownstown Township. The property is in the flood plain, according to the application, and there's a creek about 1,000 feet away.
