(STATEHOUSE) - The Indiana Trial Lawyers Association Thursday named State Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) its Legislator of the Year.
Steele, chair of the Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee, received the award for his work to improve the state's civil justice system during the 2013 legislative session.
"Throughout Sen. Steele's career he has been a stalwart in protecting the rights of injured Hoosiers whether it be in the workplace, at home or in any other arena," said Mark Ladendorf, president of ITLA. "In essence, he is a friend and advocate for the injured, the victims of wrongful transgressions and of those who have lost a loved one."
Since his election to the Senate, Steele has authored a number of bills to promote a fair civil justice system that balances the interests of all Hoosiers.
"It is an honor to be recognized by my professional peers whose devotion to the law has helped Indiana create a fair, balanced, accountable justice system," said Steele, who practices law in Bedford.
This summer and fall, Steele served as chair of the Commission on Courts, which is responsible for reviewing issues involving court administration at both the state and local levels, and making sure all Indiana courts have balanced caseloads.
"It is people like Sen. Steele who make a difference in the world, working tirelessly to champion the cause of justice in our great state," Ladendorf said.
