(SHAKAMAK) - Shakamak State Park was honored recently by Purdue Extension for hosting a 4-H summer camp that has served children since 1931.
Earlier this month, the park was given the 2013 Friend of Extension award at the Purdue Extension Professional Development Conference Awards Banquet at West Lafayette.
Children from 24 counties attend Shakamak's 2.5-week-long 4-H camp every year, according to Shakamak property manager Rob Hogg.
Park staff and 4-H have a close relationship that has involved inviting campers to serve as official representatives during the reopening of the newly renovated campground. And when the camp flooded in 2008, the park evacuated campers safely and quickly, Hogg said.
"It was this type of dedication and the quick response time to any issues that may arise during their stay that prompted the award," Hogg said.
4-H is a nationwide youth development program administered in Indiana through Purdue Extension.
Shakamak State Park is at 6265 W. State Road 48, Jasonville, IN 47438.
