(SPRINGVILLE) - An abandon home at 71 Cobb Lane went up in flames early this morning.
Perry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Max Peters says the one-story home had been unoccupied for about a year and a half and was located on Red Hill.
Firefighters from Perry, Marshall, Oolitic and Indian Creek and TOPES responded to the blaze at 2:23 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene for about five hours.
Peters says the fire had been burning for several hours before it was reported. One Perry firefighter drove near the area and smelled smoke, but thought the odor was coming from a wood stove.
Peters says the back portion of the home was gone when firefighters arrived on the scene and the home was falling into the basement.
Peters believes the fire started in the basement area near the furnace, but the cause is still under investigation.
