(SPENCER) 60-year-old Gary Staggs, of Bedford was killed in a four-car crash Monday night just west of the Monroe-Owen County line near Spencer.
According to an Owen County Police report, Staggs, was traveling east in a road construction zone where Ind. 46 and Sunnyside Lane intersect. Staggs crossed the center line and his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu sideswiped a westbound 2012 Kia being driven by 47-year-old Michael Bradburn, of Ellettsville.
Bradburn and his wife, 49-year-old Karen Bradburn, were not hurt.
Staggs' car then slid into the path of a 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by 61-year-old Reinhard Groth of Terre Haute, who was not injured.
After that, Staggs' Malibu hit a 1999 Chevrolet Impala being driven by 49-year-old Melinda Harding of Ellettsville.
Harding was freed from inside her vehicle and then taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with chest injuries. Her 2-year-old granddaughter, who was secured in a child safety seat, was not hurt but was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
Staggs was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
An Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist in the investigation into what caused the crash.
