(PAYNETOWN) - Explore the winter woods with Monroe Lake naturalist Jill Vance at Paynetown State Recreation Area on Sunday, Dec. 22.
The two-hour, off-trail hike meets at 2 p.m. in the overflow parking area, which is on the right after passing the Paynetown SRA gatehouse.
The hike is free and entrance to Paynetown SRA is free during winter. No registration is required.
Deer scrapes, wild turkey scratches, coyote traces, hibernation holes, and other animal signs will be on the search list, as well as a focus on winter vegetation.
Due to the length and terrain of the hike, Vance recommends it for ages 10 and older. Younger children with plenty hiking experience may do fine. Participants should wear good hiking shoes, preferably boots, and dress for the weather.

Paynetown SRA on Monroe Lake (stateparks.IN.gov/2954.htm) is at 4850 South State Road 446, Bloomington, 47401.
