(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University officials are planning to pave a large gravel parking lot near the football stadium on the Bloomington campus.
Officials say the estimated $6.8 million project will leave nearly 1,900 parking spaces in the lot north of Memorial Stadium. The plans include numerous trees throughout the parking area and a grassy tailgating area taking up about a quarter of the space.
IU vice president Tom Morrison tells The Herald-Times the lot will be the "greenest on campus."
The lot will be available for students and employees, but Morrison says it is only expected to come close to being filled on football game days.
Construction is being planned for next summer.
