(PAOLI) - Paoli Peaks plans to begin its ski season on Dec. 14 — provided that Mother Nature cooperates.
The Orange County facility offers downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing along with a ski lodge, pro shop and ski instruction.
Lauren Grenier, Paoli Peaks' Director of Marketing and Administration, says crews are ready to start making snow this weekend.
Paoli Peaks makes its own snow for its slopes, using water it draws from a nearby creek. Once the air and water temperatures are low enough, Paoli can start cranking up the snow machines. Humidity levels factor in, too.
In a typical year, Paoli's ski season runs from mid-December through mid-March. But that can vary widely depending on the weather.
Regular hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 3 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Closing day for the upcoming season has been tentatively set for March 9.
Paoli is also focusing more on online ticket sales this year, Grenier says, and for the first time it will be offering online-only discounts on daily lift tickets.
Paoli draws customers from the region -- Evansville, Louisville and Nashville -- but also as far away as Georgia and Alabama, Grenier said. In a typical season, the facility draws about 90,000 visitors.
Some 55 percent of Paoli's ski trails are rated "intermediate," and another 25 percent are rated for beginners.
