(BEDFORD) - A Bedford police officer ran a red light and caused a collision Friday night at the intersection of K and 16th Street, Friday night.
No one was injured in the crash.
According to a Bedford Police report, 31-year-old Justin Gilbert, of Oolitic, was driving a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle and was traveling south on K Street when he failed to stop for the red light.
Gilbert's police car, collided with a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, driven by 30-year-old Christopher Turpin, of Mitchell, who was traveling east on 16th Street.
Officer Gilbert stated he looked at the light and thought it was green and proceeded into the intersection, striking the Grand Prix on the left side.
The report states Gilbert was at fault for disregarding a traffic light.
Department procedure are that Gilbert submit to a breath test for alcohol impairment, and it was negative.
Chief Dennis Parsley says accidents involving police cars don't happen often, considering officers on routine patrol drive more than 200,000 miles a year.
