(GLENDALE) - Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area held its tenth annual youth pheasant hunt on Saturday, November 30.
Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area is located south of Montgomery in southern Daviess County.
Eight young hunters ranging in age from eleven to sixteen years old participated in the event. After registration at Glendale's shop beginning at 8:30 a.m., the youth hunters were given general safety instruction by local Conservation Officers. Afterwards the youngsters honed their shooting skills by shooting clay targets on a range instructed by Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division's Hunter Education Coordinator Tim Beck, volunteer hunter education instructors, Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area personnel, and Indiana Conservation Officers.
After the shooting exercise, everyone returned to the shop for lunch, consisting of brats and burgers prepared by Glendale staff chefs. After lunch, the young hunters gathered up for group photos and were then assigned in groups to a dog and its handler.
The handlers and dogs were from all over the state and volunteered their time and services. After the groups and their areas were assigned, Glendale personnel then released pheasants into the respective areas. Some additional birds were later released, but when all was said and done, all the young hunters had an opportunity to harvest a bird.
Many of the youngsters had no previous experience in hunting pheasants with dogs, and four youths had never hunted before.
Cash donations for the event were received from the Dubois County Sportsman Club, First National Bank of Odon, Hoefling Cycle Sales, and the Daviess County Visitor's Bureau.
These donations were used to purchase sweatshirts and ammunition, for the youth hunters, and provide lunch for all participants. The list of those to make this event successful but not limited to, Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area for its facilities and personnel, Indiana Conservation Officers, Indiana Hunter Education Coordinator, Indiana Hunter Education Volunteer Instructors, and the dogs and their handlers.
