Man Injured After Being Ejected From Rear Window Of Blazer

Last updated on Monday, January 13, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Two people were injured in an accident at the intersection of Mitchell Road and 30th Streets Sunday afternoon.

According to a Bedford Police report, when officers arrived a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer was off the east side of Mitchell Road in the grass and 2002 Dodge Caravan was also off the east side of Mitchell Road in a ditch.

33-year-old Luke Thomas, of Odon, had been ejected out of the rear glass of the Blazer and laying along the east side of Mitchell Road bleeding from a large knot on the back of his head. Thomas was not able to tell officers what happened.

Thomas was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and then flown by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, 34-year-old Joshua Dotts, of 1101 N St., was out of his vehicle and standing near the gas pumps at Jackson's Marathon Station. Dotts was complaining of abdominal pain. He had long horizontal bruises across his abdomen area. He was taken to IU Health Hospital for treatment.

Dotts told police he was approaching the intersection of 30th Street and thought the Blazer was going to stop at the intersection so he continued south on Mitchell Road. But Thomas failed to stop at the intersection and entered Mitchell Road to turn south and his Blazer collided with the Caravan.

A witness to the accident, Jalen Turner, of Hillcrest Circle, told police the same story.

He stated that the Caravan was traveling south on Mitchell Road when the Chevrolet Blazer ran the stop sign and collided with the Caravan.

The 1997 Ford F150 Turner was driving was damaged in the collision when a tire flew off the Caravan and hit the center of the tailgate of the truck that was parked at the gas pumps of Jackson's Marathon.

According to police, it appears that the Dodge Caravan was hit in the right rear fender by the Chevrolet Blazer causing the Caravan to spin and go off the roadway. The Caravan had damage to the entire driver's side, including the rear window from Thomas being ejected from the vehicle.

The Blazer had damage to the entire front end of the vehicle.

Thomas was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way.
