(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County Circuit Judge Teresa Harper sentenced 25-year-old Andre Wells to 60 years in prison for the murder of his step-father Robin Sowders.
Judge Harper cited an escalating criminal history, including a federal court charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a gun, and the heinous nature of Sowders' death as some of the aggravating factors in the case.
After 10 hours of deliberations, a Monroe County jurors on November 22 found Wells, guilty of murdering Sowders after a night of drinking at Lake Monroe's Fourwinds Resort.
51-year-old Sowders was found beaten at his East Moffett Lane home the morning of Oct. 24 2010. He died at an Indianapolis hospital the following day after the family decided to take Sowders off a ventilator that was keeping him alive.
According to a police informant Wells was angry at Sowders because he had threatened Wells' younger brother, saying he would cut the boy up and feed the pieces to his dog, Harley.
