Men's Warming Center Didn't Open Because Of Lack Of Volunteers

Last updated on Monday, January 27, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The men’s warming center in Bedford, which was to open Sunday night, did not open because volunteers could not be found to work the overnight shift.

The warming center, a collaborative effort between the Bedford and Mitchell ministerial associations, is a place for homeless men to sleep, shower and get a meal during winter months.

Salvation Army Captain Donna Rose and a member of the Bedford Ministerial Association says many volunteered to work from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., but no one volunteered for the overnight hours.

Rose says with continued single-digit temperatures forecast, she is disappointed the center won't be open and is concerned for those who can't get out of the cold.

Those wanting to volunteer can call Rose at the Salvation Army at 275-5429.

Women and children needing shelter can contact Becky's Place. Men can contact local police Departments for assistance.
