(MITCHELL) - After a long debate Monday night, the Mitchell City Council decided to make no changes to the city’s road block ordinance.
According to the Times-Mail the roadblock discussions date back to fall of 2012 when the council began debating the issue.
It passed a new ordinance early last year that limited the amount of roadblocks held in Mitchell. The ordinance outlined safety issues, age limitations and restricted the areas and times when roadblocks could be held, limiting them to the first and third Saturday of the month from March to November. It also restricted the number of roadblocks a nonprofit organization could hold
Council members still remained split on the issue.
Council President Vick Schlegel likes the limitations, however Council member Everett Ferrel believes the city should either end roadblocks altogether or open them up to everyone with no limits. Ferrell says it is unfair that some organizations get to hold a roadblock while others do not.
Ferrel then made a motion to allow any nonprofit organization serving Mitchell to have one roadblock each year on any date requested. However without a second, the motion died.
The ordinance will remain as written, with nonprofits now allowed to submit requests for dates.
