(OOLITIC) - Oolitic Girl Scout Troop 60653 has been collecting plastic lids and caps for more than a year and they need your help.
The goal - to recycle them to donate a picnic table to Dollens Elementary and Oolitic Middle School. Troop leader Denise Sproles says the troop had gathered 900 pounds, but need 1,000 and have until February 28th to reach that goal.
The troop has containers in several Bedford churches, Dollens and OMS and at the Bedford Recycling Center on J Street to collect the caps.
They are looking for laundry bottle caps, butter and coffee can lids and caps off of pop, milk and water bottles.
Sproles says as long as the caps have no metal in them they can recycle them.
Sproles said the trooptook on the project as part of its work toward the bronze and silver Girl Scout awards, which are among the highest in Scouting.
The cost of making the table (by Greentree Plastics in Evansville) will be $400. The troop has $200 so far.
The troop will also be doing other fundraisers, including a bake sale and are looking for donations.
Sproles said in addition to her troop learning the importance of recycling, they are learning how important it is when a community pulls together and helps others.
If you'd like to help, take your caps and lids to the Bedford Recycling Center on J Street. Look for the bin of caps near the plastics receptacle. Caps can also be dropped off at Sproles' home or donations sent to 208 Sixth Street in Oolitic.
Sproles will also pick up donations, call her at 276-1487.
