(SALEM) - A Salem man is facing charges of animal cruelty after police says he slammed his girlfriend’s kitten on the floor, killing it.
The Leader Democrat reports that 46-year-old Billy Wagers is charged with one felony count of animal cruelty and is being held on a $1,500 cash bond.
He was arrested on January 4th after his girlfriend called police reporting Wagers killed her kitten.
When officers arrived the woman was crying and holding the kitten, which had labored breathing. Wagers was yelling he didn't kill the cat and started talking about his finances with police.
One officer took the woman and kitten to a local vet, but the kitten died on the way.
The woman told police that Wagers had been drinking all day and had been both physically and verbally abusive and had hit her in the head. Police noted in their report that the woman suffered minor swelling.
The woman told police she was holding the 9-week-old kitten during the argument when Wagers allegedly grabbed the kitten and slung it to the floor. Wagers told the woman that he hoped the kitten died along with her.
Wagers admitted to officer that he threw the cat. Police administered a portable breath test and Wagers tested three times over the legal limit.
