(BEDFORD) - As of now the North Lawrence school board has two school makeup days its members will be asked to authorize when the group meets again in public session on Feb. 27.
Roger Moon of the Times Mail reports, two days have been missed since the last board meeting. Classes were canceled last Friday, and NL Superintendent Gary Conner is asking that April 21 be set aside as the makeup day. Inclement weather also closed school on Tuesday, and Conner is asking the school board to authorize March 21 as the makeup day. Mitchell Community Schools also will make calendar adjustments.
The total number of embedded days for NLCS was six. School has been closed eight days so far. The system won't necessarily have to make up two of those days (Jan. 6-7). NL has requested waivers for those days from the Indiana Department of Education, but Conner doesn't know whether the state will OK the request or when a decision will be made. If the days are approved, it will reduce the required number of student days from 180 to 178.
If the waiver request is denied, the two student days will be scheduled to begin the day following the last student day of the school year - May 29. If more inclement weather brings additional closings, the makeup days will be added at the end of the school year.
BNL's graduation tentatively is scheduled for May 30. By the end of February, he and BNL Principal Roger Dean will formalize a graduation date so that graduation materials can be processed.
Mitchell Community Schools dismissed classes on the same days school was closed in North Lawrence. And, like NL, snow makeup days embedded into the calendar have been depleted.
The school already has used Jan. 20 as a makeup day and also will use Feb. 17, April 7, April 18 and April 21.
Superintendent Steve Phillips says May 23, which had been scheduled as a teacher records day, now will be used as a day that students will attend (making up for the closing of school on Tuesday). Teacher records day has been moved to May 27.
Mitchell school leaders also have requested waivers for Jan. 6-7, which would mean those days wouldn't have to be made up, if the waiver is not, two additional days will be added at the end of the school year.
At present, the MHS graduation ceremony is scheduled for May 23. But, if additional cancellations occur, a decision will need to be made whether to keep graduation on the 23rd or move it to another date.
