Last updated on Thursday, January 23, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Two Bedford women were arrested after police stopped the vehicle they were in Wednesday night.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, officers stopped a vehicle being driven by 34-year-old Michelle Newland-Brekke on Old Ind. 37 in the northern part of the county after officers noticed Brekke and her passenger 43-year-old Keri Smith were not wearing seatbelts.

When police approached the vehicle they smelled a strong chemical odor.

Craig says a K-9 was called to the scene and officers discovered a white-powdery substance that tested positive for meth, a mirror and spoon with drug residue and a pill bottle that contained a schedule IV controlled substance.

Police arrested Smith on charges of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia and visiting common nuisance. Brekke was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a common nuisance.
