(UNDATED) - Despite the forecast of snow and bitterly cold temperatures, the U.S. Postal Service announced it “will be making every attempt” to deliver critical mail, such as medicine, as well as other items Monday and the rest of the week.
Employees scheduled to work tonight and Monday morning are encouraged to make arrangements to arrive on time to provide the service
To help letter carriers deliver the mail safely, the Postal Service appealed to customers to clear snow and ice from pathways leading to their mailboxes.
"Snow and ice can make delivery hazardous," said Larry Diegel, Greater Indiana district manager. "Maintaining a clear path to the mail box -- including steps, porches, walkways and street approach -- will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service and help them get mail, especially critical mai,l delivered."
Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.
Delivery service could be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes.
"The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort," said Diegel. "Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day."
In addition, residents and businesses with blue mail collection boxes near their properties are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.
"We want our letter carriers to be safe," he added. "We can only do this with the help of our customers."
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
