(COALMONT) - Firefighters from 10 departments in four counties were called to battle a major fire that caused extensive damage to the old Coalmont School and Gym early Sunday morning.
According to Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Husband the fire was reported at 1:20 a.m. at the school located at 13681 South State Road 159 in Coalmont.
When the firefighters arrived smoke was bellowing out of the roof of the school. Due to the size of the school and gym and fire, Husband called in extra department to assist.
Firefighters from the Jasonville Fire Department, Wright Township Fire Department and Linton Fire Department; Clay County including the Cory Fire Department and Clay City Fire Department; Sullivan County including the Thunderbird Fire Department and Shelburn Fire Department; and Vigo County including the Pierson Fire Department and Riley Fire Department.
The State Fire Marshal was on the scene Monday to determine the cause of the blaze, because Husband says the fire was suspicious in nature. No other information will be released until the State Fire Marshal's investigation is complete.
