(BLOOMINGTON) - Last Thursday, Bloomington police assisted county deputies in restraining a 22-year-old man armed with knives and barricaded in the basement of a house on Bloomington’s south side.
Bloomington Police were called to the home in the 4100 block of South Hedgewood Drive after a report that a mentally disturbed man was threatening his mother with knives.
Bloomington Police Sgt. Sgt. Lucas Tate says when officers confronted the man he barricaded himself in the basement, using furniture to block the door.
The father of the man told officers his son had mental issues and had not been taking his medicine.
A negotiator for the Critical Incident Response Team tried talking to the man. After negotiations the woman was released, but the man refused to leave the home.
After two hours of negotiations, the team advanced on the man, who was armed with a steak knife and large chef knife.
The man was shot with a 40mm sponge round, a non-lethal high-speed projectile. The sponge hit the man, which disoriented him and the team rushed the man and were able to restrain him.
The man was taken to a local hospital for a medical and mental evaluation.
