(INDIANAPOLIS) - Bedford North Lawrence High School Sophomore Josh Tumey bowled his way into the Saturday’s High School State Finals in Indianapolis.
The Times-Mail reports that Tumey, who has only been bowling for a few years, rolled a 268, the highest pin total of all first-round games. He followed up with a 200 and 211 for a 670 series, which earned him a coveted spot in the State Finals.
After finishing eighth in the Bloomington Regional a week ago, he secured ninth at the semistate. He was one of 1,000 boys competing across the state and has made it to the final 25. His goal is to finish in the top five.
Tumey credited his coaches, Brandon Gabhart and Patrick Henderson, with preparing him for the competition.
Bowling is not sanctioned as a sport by the Indiana High School Athletic Association, but schools are allowed to give their support to students competing in events developed and orchestrated by the Indiana Bowling Centers Association. Though the teams don't receive financial or transportation support from their respective schools, they also don't have to abide by IHSAA rules, like the one restricting competition in other leagues during the season. This marks BNL's second year of competition.
Saturday's competition is at Woodland Bowl, just north of Indianapolis.
