BNL Students May Go Half An Hour Longer To Make Up Snow Days

Last updated on Monday, February 24, 2014

(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community School officials are discussing the possibilities of student going a half an hour longer for 12 days in March, to make up for missing school because of bad weather.

According to Superintendent Gary Conner, students have had 10 days off and there have been 12 delays or early dismissals. According to state law students must attend 180 of instruction.

The Indiana Department of Education granted North Lawrence waivers for two missed days. Six days were built into the school calendar, but that still leaves students short of the mandated number of days they must attend.

Conner is recommending the school board vote to extend school hours from March 3 to March 18. If another snow day is missed, Conner hopes to add 30 minutes to the end of school days for 12 days in April.

The plan is for students in grades three to eight to prepare for ISTEP testing. Younger students will focus on accelerated reading other skills and BNL high school students will have the 30 minutes spread throughout the course of the day, spending an additional 4 minutes in each class.

If officials vote to extend the school days, the spring semester would conclude at the end of May. The board will consider Conner's recommendation at Thursday's school board meeting.
